Mueller Scholarship
Administered by the Santa Cruz County Symphony
In 1988, Ruth Mueller, a Santa Cruz music teacher, created a scholarship fund for music students under 18 who reside in Santa Cruz County. She bequeathed her home to the Santa Cruz County Symphony, who administers the fund. Her purpose was to encourage students of orchestral instruments by helping with the cost of music tuition. The Mueller Scholarships were first awarded in 1990, and SCCYS students are often recipients.
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
1. Student has demonstrated commitment to orchestral instrument for at least one year.
2. Student practices regularly and is consistent in attending lessons and rehearsals.
3. Student shows promise and has the discipline to develop as a classical musician.
Each year, the Youth and Family Committee of the Santa Cruz County Symphony
Board anticipates giving out $5,000, with awards in the range of $300-700. The money
goes directly to music teachers or ensembles, such as the Youth Symphony.
